OVERVIEW: The SUT Mod 2 is a heavyweight, submarine-launched, wire-guided torpedo developed by Germany for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. It is an advanced evolution of the original SUT family, featuring extended range, improved acoustic homing, and enhanced reliability.

DETAILS: "SUT" stands for Surface and Underwater Target, indicating its dual-role combat capability. The Mod 2 was introduced in the late 1980s as a modernized version of the SUT Mod 1, retaining the 533 mm diameter, silver-zinc battery electric propulsion, and heavy warhead. It includes major upgrades in electronics, wire-guidance reliability, and seeker logic for improved resistance to decoys and countermeasures. The Mod 2 is equipped with a high-performance passive/active acoustic seeker and provides significantly greater operational range, reportedly up to 30 km.

TYPE: Heavyweight Dual-Purpose Guided Torpedo

FUNCTION: The SUT Mod 2 is launched from 533 mm torpedo tubes aboard submarines, travels under wire guidance during the early phase, and then switches to active or passive acoustic homing to engage submarines or surface ships. It is effective in both open ocean and littoral waters under ECM and countermeasure conditions.
